We are few who understand his greatness. I studied for him 1977-1984.
Well enough played I guess, but it still sounds like "Bottesini the clown", like, not serious or high quality music (an impression I always also got from Gary Karr). But that's just due to how it's played. (Compare to Mikyung Sung's album.)

I used to play this for my grandfather when I was a teenager in music school. He would always listen from the other room and loved this one in particular. I miss him, and I miss my music. I need to play again.

No doubt he was really important to the double bass history... However his version of this piece is almost a new composition 😂 crazy cuts for no apparent reason, notes that aren't even close to the original piece.... I also understand that in the time people didn't really care about those "details"... Howsoever Mr Streicher did a really great contribution to the evolution of the double bass Technik

¿Who plays?
This is a recording of Koussevitzky playing his own composition on his famous Amati bass with gut strings. The sliding you hear was the playing style of his generation.
@@michaelnigrin6599 his performance in these recordings is also heavily influenced by being out of practice. he largely retired as a bassist for decades and was one the world's top conductors. he made these recordings after many years with no public performances as a soloist, and at an advanced age. I suspect some of the sliding is just finding the pitches, frankly.
